Ahead of the 2024 General elections, the opposition joined hands and formed a grand alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a unified anti BJP front at the Opposition’s Unity Meet held in Bengaluru on July 17th and 18th. The next meeting of ‘INDIA’ will be held in Mumbai where the alliance will divulge further details centering on seat sharing, a common minimum programme, and deliberate upon strategies to tackle the ruling BJP at the Centre.

“We should be together for the goodwill of the people. 2024 elections, we will fight unitedly and come out with great success”, said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Kharge further added that the opposition’s meeting today, was aimed at saving the democracy and constitution of this country.

At the end of the two-day long Opposition’s unity meet, Chapter two, the parties drew up a plan to further their cause. A 11-member committee will be set up to oversee the operations. In addition, a secretariat would be set up in Delhi, to look into campaign management, and other smaller committees will be set up to tackle specific problems.

West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee took a jibe at the NDA and said, “We are here for the youth, the farmers, the students, the Dalits, we are here for the country. NDA, can you challenge INDIA?” Banerjee further added that the meeting was constructive and fruitful.

“We have come together with a common goal to reunite India”, said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. This comes after AAP and the INC set aside their differences pertaining to the Delhi Ordinance. “The differences between the parties are not so big that they can't be put behind for the sake of people”, said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that this fight is not just between the opposition and BJP. The country’s free voice is being attacked upon; the fight is to save that voice. “The fight is between NDA and India. The fight is between Narendra Modiji and India. The fight is between his ideology and India”, Gandhi added.

The NDA on the other hand, has denied that their meeting was a reaction to the Opposition’s Unity Meet. “It is a matter of immense joy that our valued NDA partners from across India will be attending the meeting. Ours is a time-tested alliance which seeks to further national progress and fulfil regional aspirations”, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The NDA too held a meeting on July 18 with 38 other parties.

The third chapter of the Opposition’s Unity Meet will be held in Mumbai, details of which will be disclosed in the due course.
