The Opposition parties under the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) visited the strife torn Manipur for two days in order to assess the situation on ground. The 21-member delegation of MPs met the state Governor on Sunday, submitted a deputation, highlighting “the condition in the relief camps is pathetic to say the least”.

“The failure of both the Central and State government to protect the lives and properties of the people of the two communities is apparent from the figures of more than 140 deaths, more than 500 injuries, burning of more than 5000 houses and internal displacement of more than 60,000 people” read the deputation submitted to the state Governor by he ‘INDIA’ opposition delegation

The leaders went to several relief camps, met with victims and survivors at Churachandpur, Moirang and Imphal. The delegation now plan to raise their assessment on the floor of the Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session. The leaders also met with the survivors who were violated, viral videos of what had shaken the conscience of the nation after they emerged on July 19. “I met with the 21 year old girl who was paraded naked. She told me how police took them to the mob instead of rescuing them, this even after they had hopped inside a police gypsy and had pleaded for help. The institution that is meant to protect you, left them to mob to be gang-raped” said TMC MP Sushmita Dev.

The deputation to the governor also stressed on how prolonged internet ban is “aiding to unsustainable rumours” and that has only further contributed to existing distrust.

“We are shocked to see the current condition of Manipur. It hurts but it’s even more shocking as how brazen is the PM of this country with his silence. PM Modi’s silence shows his indifference to the plight of the people of Manipur. We will raise the issues in Parliament” said Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, Lok Sabha Leader of opposition.

The Monsoon Session of the Parliament had a rocky start over the issue of Manipur crisis, opposition had been demanding statement from the Prime Minister. They have even moved a no-confidence motion against the central government over the same. The first incident of violence was reported on May 3, it’s close to 3 months now and the situation is yet to be completely under control in Manipur.
